Superfood Spotlight: Barley Powder

Published on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 By Amy Lynn Grover

What?

Barley powder is made from dried leaves of the barley plant.  Barley grass is the ultimate slow burning highly digestible carbohydrate, nutrients are digested and available quickly which gives the powder its strong healing effects and health benefits. Just blend into smoothies and recipes.

Health Benefits:

High in amino acids, antioxidants and enzymes help build and maintain a strong immune system

High in dietary fiber which is loaded with Beta-glucan

Aids in lowering cholesterol (propionic acid, responsible for producing cholesterol in the liver)

Stabilizes blood sugar for diabetics

Low on the glycemic index

Has all of the nutritional value of barley (high levels of tocotrienols and beta glucans), contains 1,000s of active enzymes.

It is an ultra-long-chain carbohydrate that takes up to 4 hours to break down in the digestive tract which provides a slow, sustained release of energy and insulin (because the release is so slow, it actually lowers the body’s insulin response).

It provides over 400% more energy per calorie than any other food calorie known (despite what the USDA may tell you, not all calories are created equal).

It produces readings of up to 320,000 on the Bovis scale.
