To begin, all you need is an open mind. Your lack of whatever, is the best reason to begin…
You don’t need to be flexible, although when practiced regularly overall range of motion is increased. Flexibility is increased; joints become lubricated and from lengthening while strengthening and stabilizing your body becomes extremely compact and streamlined with no bulkiness.
It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, as long as your body is within alignment, listen to your body, only bend, stretch, press or reach as much as you can on that given day. When needed you can always take a rest and come to child’s pose (shown in photo).
Yoga simply is just movement with breath, muscling through poses will completely defeat you. It doesn’t matter if you fall over or out of the pose, the floor isn’t that far from where you are standing; it doesn’t hurt, nor is it embarrassing (speaking from experience).
Just keep a sense of humor about your practice, it’s a chance to be a kid and play with what your working with; pretty soon the most daunting poses will seem natural.
Yoga is personal, it’s all about you, your journey and completely yours to discover… It will change your life!
The real yoga already lies there within you– In your heart.
